No Mind
Original Zen calligraphy by Zen monk and artist Peter Cutler
No mind ("mushin" in Japanese) is a primary teaching in Zen. The mind of thought must always remain ignorant of Truth. Yet our Original Nature is not. Let go of thought, discover your Original Nature and you will realize the great truth of this.
This calligraphy demonstrates the essence of No Mind. "No" is strong and bold, while the word "Mind" begins to fade away as the brush runs out of ink. The dot of the letter "i" is very tiny showing that the separate self identity, which is part of mind, is also insubstantial and disappearing. All this came about not intentionally, but as part of painting the calligraphy free of any thought or intention. That is the state of No Mind. Action and result become one.
About Peter Cutler
Peter Cutler is an internationally acclaimed artist, photographer and film director. At the young age of 20, he won Nikon Cameras prestigious international photography contest. Shows at leading galleries and art and photography magazines soon followed.
